Any parent can attest that raising kids is one of the toughest yet most fulfilling jobs in the world. It is also one of those things that you will always feel least prepared for. But there is no perfect time for a person to be a parent. Advice goes a long way to help you with your child’s early development.
- Boost your child’s self-esteem
You may not know this but children start developing their sense of self as babies when they see themselves through their parents’ eyes. They absorb your tone of voice, body language and expression. All these play a role in curving out their self-esteem. So you need to praise their accomplishments even small ones. Let them do things independently to make them feel strong and capable.
Don’t compare them with other kids and avoid making loaded statements using words as weapons.
- Catch your kids doing good
How many times do you react negatively in a given day? Sometimes parents criticize more than compliment. It is much more effective to catch your kids doing the right thing and encourage them for that. Make it a point to find something to praise them about on a daily basis. Be generous with your rewards, the love, hugs and compliments will work just fine.
- Set limits and be consistent with your discipline
It is important for you to discipline your child. The goal is to help your child choose acceptable behavior and learn self-control. Your child will definitely test your limits but they need those limits if they are to grow into responsible adults. Have house rules and help your kids understand your expectations of them. Have a system in place and once you say there are consequences for something they do wrong, make sure you follow through with them. Be consistent as it is the only way they will learn what you expect.
- Make time for your child
In today’s society, it is becoming more difficult for parents and kids to eat a meal together let alone have some quality family time. But your kids want to spend time with you, having breakfast together and all sorts of family time. It is the lack of attention that drives most children to act out or misbehave. If you want, you can create a schedule time to spend with your family and even have a “special night” weekly. Also look for other ways to connect with your kids.
- Be a good role model
Children learn a lot by watching what their parents do. The younger they are, the more cues they take. So, before you do anything in front of your child, you should ask yourself what character you are laying out for your child to pick up. Since your child is always watching what you do, model the traits you wish to see in them.
The period of early childhood development is crucial for every child. It lays the foundation of what kind of people they will be in the future. So do your best to make it a worthwhile experience for you and for them.
